I built a website from scratch, started getting traffic from Google and sold my first beat back in 2006 for $300 with exclusive rights. This is before I had any clue about leasing or selling non-exclusive rights. I sent the beat out on a physical CD with a printed out license agreement in the mail. After this I was hooked.
My first sale was while I was in college back in 2005. It was a popular website that was one of the 1st to help producers sale beats. I sold exclusive rights for a “Eastcoast” style beat for $50. Even though it was not much, I was shocked that something I made from scratch would even sale. Everything took off from there.
I think, I sold my first one on RocBattle, when the site still had a good reputation (must have been 2009 or 2010). It was a lease for like 15 bucks with 50% comission, but the fact that somebody bought my beat just like that blew my mind (my beats weren’t very good back then and I did no marketing at all).
Not sure what exactly happened, but at some point they shut down the site for like a few months, apparently there were license issues with their website system or something like that. The point is, they didn’t pay out the remaining balances, just killed off paid premium memberships and didn’t really communicate with their members.
They have been back up again for a few years now and they are doing beat battles, but I have no idea if they are trustworthy or not.
